Abraham Harold Maslow was born on April 1, 1908, in Brooklyn, the eldest of seven children of Jewish immigrants who had fled tsarist persecution in Kyiv. Bullied by antisemitic gangs and estranged from his mother, the young Maslow retreated into libraries. He dropped out of legal studies at City College of New York, transferred to Wisconsin, and completed his PhD in 1934 under strict behaviorist training he found deeply unsatisfying.

At Columbia he found a new mentor in Alfred Adler. From 1937 to 1951 he taught at Brooklyn College, where he met the anthropologist Ruth Benedict and the Gestalt psychologist Max Wertheimer. Rather than studying these "wonderful human beings" through experiments, Maslow simply observed them — notes that seeded his lifelong project of identifying what mentally healthy people have in common.

His signature framework appeared in a 1943 Psychological Review paper. Five layers — physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization — were arranged in a "prepotent hierarchy." The pyramid diagram universally associated with his name was never drawn by Maslow himself; it was added later by textbook publishers. From the very first paper he warned the order is "not nearly so rigid as we may have implied." Across Motivation and Personality (1954), Toward a Psychology of Being (1962), and the posthumous Farther Reaches of Human Nature (1971), he layered on peak experiences, Being-values, meta-motivation and, late in life, plateau experiences.

He co-founded the American Association for Humanistic Psychology in 1962, served as APA president in 1967-68, and in 1969 launched transpersonal psychology as a "fourth force." Critics charge the hierarchy carries Western individualist bias, and David Myers has noted the selection bias in his roster of self-actualizers — Lincoln, Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt — figures who embody Maslow's own values. He died of a heart attack while jogging in Menlo Park, California, on June 8, 1970, at age 62.
