Alfredo Di Stefano personally created the golden age of club football. His eleven years at Real Madrid elevated club competition to a new dimension and established the authority of the European Cup (now Champions League) as a tournament.
Born in 1926 in Buenos Aires to an Italian immigrant family, he began his career at River Plate. After becoming the Argentine league's top scorer, a players' strike led him to Millonarios in Colombia, where he again displayed overwhelming goal-scoring prowess.
In 1953, he joined Real Madrid. At the time, Real was not among Europe's elite, but his arrival changed history. From 1956 to 1960, the club achieved the unprecedented feat of winning five consecutive European Cups. Di Stefano scored in all five finals. The 1960 final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Glasgow was particularly iconic - he scored a hat trick in a legendary 7-3 victory.
